Kanazawa Station and Tsuzumi Gate

Kanazawa· 0.7h visit· easy

The striking gateway to the city, a giant wooden Tsuzumi drum gate and vast glass Motenashi Dome fronting the shinkansen station.

Kanazawa Station is far more than a transit hub; its eastern forecourt is one of the city's signature sights and, for most visitors arriving on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, the first impression of Kanazawa. The centrepiece is the Tsuzumi Gate (Tsuzumi-mon), a monumental wooden structure completed in 2005 whose two thick, drum-shaped columns are modelled on the tsuzumi, the hand drum used in Noh theatre, an art form with deep roots in Kanazawa. Rising behind it is the Motenashi Dome, or hospitality dome, a sweeping canopy of glass and steel that shelters the plaza and was conceived, in a city famous for its rain and snow, as a giant umbrella held out to greet travellers. The pairing of ancient wooden form and futuristic glass has made the station a celebrated piece of architecture, and it has appeared on international lists of the world's most beautiful railway stations.

The forecourt rewards a proper look. By day the timber gate frames photographs against the glittering dome; after dark both are illuminated, and the scene becomes the city's most reliable evening photo opportunity. Set into the plaza is the Yukiakari-no-michi fountain clock, a digital water feature that spells out the current time and rotating welcome messages using precisely controlled jets of falling water, a small piece of theatre that regularly draws a crowd.

Inside and beneath the station, the experience continues. The Anto concourse gathers dozens of shops selling Kanazawa's renowned crafts and foods under one roof: gold-leaf products, Kutani porcelain, Kaga-yuzen textiles, wagashi sweets, sake, and boxed seafood, making it an excellent and efficient place to buy souvenirs or grab a meal before boarding. A well-staffed tourist information centre with English-speaking staff and free maps sits within the station, and the bus terminal on the plaza is the hub from which the Kanazawa Loop Bus and city buses fan out to every major sight.

As a modern public building, the station is fully accessible, with lifts, escalators, clear signage, tactile paving, and shelter from the weather throughout; the plaza is broad, flat, and step-free. Practically speaking, this is the beginning and end of most Kanazawa itineraries: the Kagayaki shinkansen reaches Tokyo in about two and a half hours, and the station connects the city to Toyama, Fukui, and, via Tsuruga, the Kyoto and Osaka region.

There is no wrong season to admire it, though the illuminated evening view is the most memorable, and a snowy night, with the dome sheltering the lit gate, captures the spirit of the design perfectly. Because everything radiates from here, it is worth pausing on arrival or departure to take in the gate and dome rather than rushing straight to the platforms or the bus stands.

A local's tip

Circle back to the east plaza after dark, when the Tsuzumi Gate and glass dome are illuminated, and watch the Yukiakari fountain clock spell out the time and welcome messages in falling streams of water; then raid the Anto concourse for gold-leaf sweets and local crafts before your train.

Getting there

This is Kanazawa's main railway station and the arrival point for the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo. The Tsuzumi Gate and Motenashi Dome stand over the east (Kenrokuen) exit; the Kanazawa Loop Bus and most city buses depart from the plaza directly beneath.
