Jumonjibaru Observatory

The Jumonjibaru Observatory is Beppu's premier night-view spot, a hillside lookout on an elevated plateau northwest of the city that commands a magnificent sweeping panorama of the entire Beppu Bay and the glittering town below. Set well above the coast, it takes in a vast arc of scenery, and after dark the spread of city lights curving around the dark water has earned it national recognition as one of Japan's finest night views, listed among the country's celebrated Best 100 Night Views.

By day the observatory already offers a superb outlook. From its perch the whole of Beppu is laid out beneath you, the bay stretching to the horizon, threads of onsen steam rising from the districts below, and the mountains framing the scene. On clear days the view extends across the Seto Inland Sea, and it is sometimes possible to make out the distant coast of Shikoku on the far side of the water, giving a real sense of Beppu's position on the eastern edge of Kyushu.

It is at night, though, that Jumonjibaru truly comes into its own. As the sun sets, the city lights blink on one by one until the whole basin sparkles, the coastline traced in light and the bay a pool of darkness beyond. The elevated, open vantage makes for an uninterrupted, cinematic panorama, and the spot has become a favorite for couples, photographers, and anyone seeking a romantic or dramatic end to a day in Beppu. The scene rewards a tripod and a little patience as the sky deepens from dusk to full night.

Because it sits on the heights near the Myoban onsen district on the way up toward the mountains, the observatory combines well with other elevated attractions. Many visitors pair it with the steam views of the Yukemuri Observatory, the Myoban hot springs known for their traditional straw-hut sulphur baths, or a trip up Mount Tsurumi by ropeway, stringing together the high points of the Beppu area, quite literally, in a single outing.

The observatory is a straightforward, no-cost stop, but its relatively out-of-the-way hillside location means it is best reached by car, which also makes it easy to time a visit for sunset and the onset of the night view. There is a parking area on site, and a viewing platform gives an unobstructed outlook.

To get here, drive about 30 minutes from Beppu Station, or roughly 15 minutes from the Beppu interchange heading toward Myoban; those relying on public transport can take a Kamenoi bus and get off at the Jumonjibaru Observatory-mae stop nearby, though service is limited, so checking timetables in advance is wise. Local buses are not covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Admission is free and the site is accessible at any hour, with the after-dark hours by far the most rewarding.
