Himeji Central Park

Himeji Central Park is a sprawling combined safari and amusement park east of the city, and one of the Kansai region's most popular family destinations. In a single ticket it bundles a genuine drive-through safari, a lively amusement park with roller coasters and rides, a summer swimming-pool complex, and a winter ice rink — enough to fill an entire day and keep visitors of every age entertained. For families traveling through Himeji, it is the obvious counterpoint to a morning of castle sightseeing.

The safari is the headline attraction. Visitors can drive their own car along the winding route or ride the park's dedicated bus, passing through enclosures where lions, tigers, bears, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and elephants roam in spacious, naturalistic settings. Seeing a giraffe amble past the windshield or a lion lounge a few meters away is a genuine thrill, and a walking-safari zone lets you get closer to smaller animals, feed some species, and watch feeding demonstrations. Allow at least half a day, and ideally a full one, to do the park justice — the safari alone can absorb well over an hour, especially if you factor in the walking zone and feeding times. Direct buses run from Himeji Station on weekends and holidays, and driving is straightforward with the on-site parking. Tickets cover both the safari and the amusement park, with seasonal add-ons for the pool or rink.
