Higashihama Coast Lookout

Higashihama, at the far eastern edge of Tottori Prefecture where it meets Hyogo, is a broad crescent of white sand fronting some of the clearest water on the San'in coast. It marks the eastern end of the San'in Kaigan National Park and UNESCO Global Geopark, the same protected coastline that includes the famous Uradome Coast further west, and it shares that shore's hallmark combination of pale sand, dark pines and luminous, blue-green sea.

The beach's most distinctive feature is its setting beside the railway. JR Higashi-Hama Station, the easternmost station in Tottori, sits almost on the sand, so the platform itself doubles as a viewpoint: stepping off the train, you look straight out over the beach to the open Sea of Japan. Few places in Japan put a station and a white-sand beach so close together, and the spot has become quietly well known for that reason, drawing photographers and travellers who ride the coastal line specifically to catch the view of glittering water framed by the platform and pines. The clarity of the shallows here, shading from pale turquoise near the shore to deep blue offshore, is striking on a calm, sunny day.

The beach faces roughly north, so midday and early-afternoon sun light the water most vividly, and summer is the classic season, when the sand is used for swimming and the sea is at its most inviting. Even outside bathing season the scene holds up: clear autumn days bring long sightlines and quiet sands, and the low light of morning and evening gives soft colour to the coast. As part of the Geopark, the shoreline also shows the granite and rocky character of the wider San'in coast at its eastern extremity, with headlands and clear coves nearby.

Because it is a natural beach, the viewpoint is free and open at all times, with restrooms and parking available in the beach area and simple seasonal facilities in summer. The setting is peaceful and uncommercial compared with the busier central beaches of the prefecture, which is part of its charm.

Access could hardly be simpler for a Tottori coastal spot: unlike the Uradome lookouts, which require a bus, Higashihama has its own station. Ride the JR San'in Main Line to Higashi-Hama Station, and the beach and coastal viewpoint are only about a three-minute walk from the platform, essentially at your feet as you arrive. Trains on this rural stretch run relatively infrequently, so check the timetable and plan your return, but the ease of stepping from a JR train directly onto a white-sand beach makes Higashihama one of the most accessible and photogenic coastal viewpoints in the prefecture, and a natural eastern bookend to a day spent exploring the San'in Kaigan coast.
