Ajiro Observatory Deck

Ajiro Observatory Deck sits on a pine-clad headland above the little fishing harbour of Ajiro, at the western gateway to Tottori's celebrated Uradome Coast. This 15-kilometre stretch of ria coastline forms the westernmost part of the San'in Kaigan National Park and the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark, and it is protected as a National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument. The intricate mix of granite cliffs, sea caves, arches and scattered islets has earned it the nickname "San'in no Matsushima" after the famous bay in northern Japan.

The deck itself is a simple railed platform reached on foot from the Ajiro Port promenade. From it you look out over Sengan Matsushima, a large rock pierced by a natural tunnel, along with Kannon-ura cove and the crenellated line of the coast running east. On calm days the water below is startlingly clear, shading from jade to deep blue, and the pale granite and dark pines create the classic San'in colour palette that photographers come for.

The short climb from the harbour is part of the pleasure. The path is the beginning of the Uradome Coast Natural Track, a walking route that threads past lookouts, coves and geological features toward Otani Beach. Even a brief out-and-back gives you views down into caves and inlets that you cannot see from the road or the sightseeing boats. It is a genuinely scenic walk rather than a drive-up viewpoint, so wear proper shoes; the trail is uneven in places and can be slippery after rain.

A local highlight is the summer "fishing fire" tradition. From early to mid-summer, white squid come inshore to spawn and the boats that pursue them light powerful lamps; from an elevated spot like this the dark Sea of Japan is strung with lights like a galactic railway. Daytime visits reward you with the clearest water and boldest colours, while spring and autumn bring comfortable walking weather and quiet trails.

The Uradome Coast is also the departure point for glass-bottom sightseeing boats and small-craft tours that slip through narrow rock passages, and for sea-kayak touring, so many visitors pair the observatory walk with a boat trip out of Ajiro Port. Basic facilities, restrooms and parking are available around the harbour, along with seafood restaurants.

Getting here takes a little planning as there is no station on the coast itself. The simplest route is a Hinomaru or Nikko bus from JR Tottori Station bound for Iwami, alighting near Ajiro Port after about forty minutes; alternatively ride the JR San'in Main Line to Iwami Station and take a taxi the remaining few kilometres. From the port, follow the promenade and the signed track uphill for around twenty minutes to reach the deck. Buses are infrequent, so check return times before setting out, and consider combining the visit with the wider Uradome Coast and the nearby Geopark museum for a full half-day on this dramatic shore.
