Global Tower

Global Tower is a striking, ultra-modern landmark that rises 125 metres beside the B-Con Plaza convention center in central Beppu, offering an easy and inexpensive way to take in a bird's-eye view of the hot-spring city and its bay. Slender and sculptural, with an open lattice-like form, the tower is part of a convention complex designed by the internationally renowned architect Arata Isozaki, one of Japan's most celebrated modern architects, and it makes a bold contemporary counterpoint to Beppu's steamy, traditional onsen character.

The tower's main attraction is its observation deck, set at around 100 metres above the ground and reached by elevator. Unusually, the deck is open-air, so rather than viewing the city through glass you stand out in the breeze with the panorama spread around you. From this height the whole of Beppu unfolds: the dense townscape threaded with rising onsen steam, the wide sweep of Beppu Bay, the surrounding mountains including Mount Tsurumi, and the coastline curving into the distance. On clear days the view reaches far along the shore of Kyushu.

The experience is quick, comfortable, and remarkably good value. Admission is only around 300 yen, among the cheapest tower views anywhere in Japan, and because Global Tower is not a major tourist draw, you often have the airy deck largely to yourself, a pleasant contrast to the crowds at more famous observation towers. That combination of low cost, easy access, and uncrowded calm makes it a smart stop for travelers who want an overview of the city without much fuss.

The deck is rewarding at different times of day. In clear daylight the bay glitters and the mountains stand out crisply, while toward dusk the city lights begin to sparkle and the sky over the sea softens into color, and the rising onsen steam catches the changing light. Being outdoors, the deck also lets you feel the temperature and sea air, adding to the sense of being up above the city.

Global Tower sits within easy reach of Beppu's other attractions and works well as an orientation stop early in a visit, helping you get your bearings before diving into the town below. From here you can plan a route to the colorful hells of the Jigoku Meguri circuit, the many onsen bathhouses, the Yukemuri Observatory with its steam views, and the ropeway up Mount Tsurumi. The convention center at its base sometimes hosts events and exhibitions as well.

To get there, take a bus from Beppu Station to the B-Con Plaza in about eight minutes, or walk roughly 20 minutes; the tower is impossible to miss beside the main hall, and parking is available for drivers. Note that local buses are not covered by the Japan Rail Pass, but fares are minimal. The observation deck is generally open from morning until evening, with shorter hours in winter, and the modest admission applies. Allow around 30 minutes to ride up, circle the deck, and take in the views. Affordable, breezy, and centrally located, Global Tower is a quick win for a panoramic look at Beppu.
