Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design

The Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design, known by its initials TAD, is one of the most engaging modern museums on the Sea of Japan coast. The building itself is part of the experience. Its wide windows frame the canal and, on clear days, the serrated wall of the Tateyama mountains beyond. The real showstopper is the rooftop, the free-to-enter Onomatopoeia Garden designed by graphic artist Taku Satoh, where colourful, abstract play structures — named for Japanese sound-words — invite children to climb and everyone to photograph the mountains through their forms. It is a rare museum rooftop that is a genuine destination in itself, and it links visually to the greenery of adjacent Kansui Park, one of Toyama's most beloved public spaces.

A visit is easy and relaxed. Ground-floor areas, the museum shop, the design gallery, and the rooftop can be enjoyed without a ticket, while the collection and special shows carry modest fees. The stylish cafe and shop, stocked with well-chosen design objects, make good places to pause. The building is fully accessible, flat, and comfortable, and an hour and a half is enough for the highlights, though design lovers will happily linger longer.

TAD sits about fifteen minutes' walk from Toyama Station, or a short hop on the city's light rail, and pairs naturally with a stroll around Kansui Park and its photogenic canal, cafe, and pedestrian bridge.
