Tenmonkan District

Tenmonkan is the beating commercial and social heart of Kagoshima, a dense warren of covered shopping arcades, department stores, restaurants, bars and cafes that has been the city's central gathering place for generations. If Shiroyama and Sakurajima are Kagoshima's scenery, Tenmonkan is its everyday pulse, and no visit to the city is complete without an evening spent wandering its glowing streets.

The district takes its curious name, meaning roughly 'hall of astronomy,' from an observatory that the reforming lord Shimazu Shigehide built here in the late eighteenth century to study the heavens and reform the calendar. The observatory is long gone, but the name stuck and now signifies something quite different: the largest entertainment and shopping quarter in southern Kyushu. The main arcades are roofed against Kagoshima's sun and volcanic ash, allowing comfortable browsing whatever the weather or the mood of the volcano.

By day, Tenmonkan is a place to shop and graze. The arcades house everything from fashion boutiques and drugstores to specialist shops selling Satsuma-age fish cakes, karukan sponge cakes, sweet potato treats and local shochu, the distilled spirit that Kagoshima produces more of than anywhere in Japan. It is also the acknowledged birthplace of shirokuma, or 'white bear,' a towering bowl of shaved ice crowned with fruit, sweet beans and condensed milk that has become a national dessert; several venerable cafes here still serve the original recipe, and trying one is a delicious rite of passage.

After dark, the district transforms. The side streets light up with izakaya, yakitori counters, ramen shops and bars, and this is the place to sample Kagoshima's celebrated cuisine: kurobuta black pork simmered in shabu-shabu or breaded as tonkatsu, jidori free-range chicken, kibinago silver fish, and endless varieties of imo-jochu sweet-potato shochu. The atmosphere is friendly and unpretentious, a world away from Tokyo's polish, and locals are famously welcoming to visitors willing to try the regional specialities.

Practically, Tenmonkan could not be easier to reach. It sits at the intersection of Kagoshima's tram lines, with the Tenmonkan-dori stop depositing you right at the arcades, and it is walkable from the ferry terminal and the waterfront. The streets are flat, sheltered and accessible, with plentiful restrooms and ATMs. Many travellers base themselves in or near the district for its convenience.

Whether you come to shop for souvenirs, dig into a bowl of shirokuma on a hot afternoon, or settle in for a long evening of shochu and black pork, Tenmonkan captures the relaxed, flavourful spirit of Kagoshima better than anywhere else. It is the natural place to end a day of volcano-gazing and samurai history, back among the lights and the crowds of the living city.
