Seto Ohashi Memorial Park

Seto Ohashi Memorial Park stretches along the Kojima waterfront in southern Kurashiki, right at the foot of the Great Seto Bridge, and it exists to celebrate one of modern Japan's most ambitious feats of engineering. Where the Washuzan hilltop gives you the bridge from above and afar, this park gives it to you from directly beneath, letting you stand at the water's edge and crane your neck at the immense towers and cables soaring overhead toward Shikoku.

The Great Seto Bridge, opened in 1988 after roughly a decade of construction, is a chain of six bridges strung across five small islands, carrying both a road and a railway on its double-decked structure for around 13 kilometres across the Seto Inland Sea. It was the first fixed link between the main island of Honshu and Shikoku, and it remains one of the longest combined road-and-rail bridge systems in the world. Seen up close from the memorial park, its scale is genuinely startling; trains rumble across the lower deck while cars stream along above, all suspended high over the shipping lanes.

The park was laid out to mark the bridge's completion and offers a pleasant, open waterfront space to walk, picnic and take in the view. Lawns and paths run along the shore, there are spots to sit and watch the ships passing beneath the span, and in spring the grounds bloom with cherry blossoms that frame the bridge attractively. Interpretive displays explain the engineering and history of the crossing, and a nearby observation tower, run separately, offers an elevated vantage for those who want to look down on the bridge and the scattered islands of the Inland Sea.

Because the park sits at the very point where Honshu meets the bridge, it is a natural complement to the other attractions of southern Kurashiki. Many visitors pair it with the Washuzan Hill Observatory for the classic elevated panorama, or with the nearby Shimotsui old port town, once a busy harbour for cotton and coastal shipping. The area is also known for the Kojima district's denim industry, so a trip here can be combined with a browse along Kojima Jeans Street.

The park itself is free to enter and open throughout the day, with restrooms and parking on site, though the observation tower and some facilities charge admission. Evenings can be especially rewarding: on selected nights the Great Seto Bridge is illuminated, its lights tracing the long curve of the span across the dark water in a genuinely photogenic display. Checking the lighting schedule before you go is worthwhile.

To reach the park, take the JR Seto-Ohashi Line, covered by the Japan Rail Pass, to Kojima Station, the last station on Honshu before the trains cross the bridge, then a short local bus ride or taxi to the waterfront at the bridge's foot.
