Sapporo TV Tower

The Sapporo TV Tower is the city's most recognisable retro landmark, a red-and-white steel tower that has presided over the eastern end of Odori Park since 1957. Standing 147.2 meters tall and designed by Tachu Naito — the same structural engineer behind Tokyo Tower — it belongs to that optimistic postwar generation of Japanese broadcast towers, and although digital broadcasting has since moved elsewhere, it remains a beloved observation point and a symbol of central Sapporo.

The observation deck sits at 90 meters, reached by elevator in about a minute. Its great attraction is orientation: the tower looks straight down the full length of Odori Park, the grassy boulevard that slices east to west across the city grid, giving a uniquely legible view of Sapporo's ordered blocks running to the mountains on the horizon. By day you can pick out the surrounding peaks, the Ishikari plain and the geometry of the planned city; by night the view becomes a river of light, the park illuminated and the streets glowing in neat rows.

Timing transforms the experience. In early February the deck offers a coveted vantage over the Sapporo Snow Festival, when Odori Park fills with enormous snow and ice sculptures stretching into the distance directly below. From late November through winter the same view sparkles with the White Illumination light displays, and in summer the deck overlooks the beer gardens that colonise the park. Autumn adds warm foliage to the boulevard, making almost any season worth the climb.

The tower leans cheerfully into its retro identity. Its unofficial mascot, the mustachioed "Terebi To-san" (TV Dad), grins from souvenirs throughout the gift shop, and the building has become a nostalgic icon rather than a cutting-edge attraction — part of its charm. On the third floor a small food court and a shrine to the mascot add to the quirky, mid-century atmosphere.

Compared with the taller, more modern JR Tower observatory across the city centre, Sapporo TV Tower trades altitude for a lower, more intimate and more photogenic angle straight down the park. It is also supremely convenient, standing right above Odori Station where all three subway lines meet, so it slots easily into any day in the city.

Allow around forty-five minutes for the ride up, a slow circuit of the deck and a browse of the souvenirs. For the most memorable visit, arrive shortly before sunset so you can watch daylight fade and the city and park lights bloom below — the classic Sapporo panorama that has featured on countless postcards for more than sixty years.
