Sakae

Sakae is downtown Nagoya at its most polished and energetic: the city's premier district for shopping, dining and nightlife, wrapped around a spine of landmarks that light up spectacularly after dark. If Osu is Nagoya's scruffy, subcultural playground, Sakae is its confident, cosmopolitan showcase — the place locals dress up to visit and where the city stages its biggest events.

The district's visual anchor is the Chubu Electric Power Mirai Tower, a 180-metre steel tower completed in 1954 that predates Tokyo Tower and now stands, floodlit, at the head of the long green ribbon of Hisaya-odori Park. Beside it floats one of Nagoya's most photographed structures, Oasis 21, a bus terminal and shopping complex crowned by an oval glass 'Spaceship Aqua' roof holding a shallow film of water; visitors can walk the illuminated rim for free, with the Mirai Tower framed dramatically behind. Together they form the postcard image of modern Nagoya.

Shopping defines daytime Sakae. Grand department stores such as Matsuzakaya and Mitsukoshi, the Lachic and PARCO fashion buildings, and international flagship boutiques line the broad avenues, while beneath the streets an enormous network of underground malls — Central Park, Sakae Chikagai and Sun Moon — lets you shop, eat and transfer between subway lines without ever surfacing, a genuine blessing in Nagoya's humid summers. The Nadya Park complex adds design shops and the International Design Centre, reflecting the district's creative streak.

After dark Sakae transforms. The neighbouring Nishiki 3-chome quarter, a short walk north-west, holds one of central Japan's densest concentrations of bars, izakaya, clubs and hostess lounges, and the whole area hums until the small hours. Back toward the tower, seasonal illuminations, open-air beer gardens in summer and festival stages keep the park lively through the year.

Sakae is also Nagoya's civic stage. Hisaya-odori Park, redeveloped and reopened in 2020 as a landscaped promenade of lawns, cafes and terraces, hosts markets, food events and the city's largest gatherings, including the summer Nagoya Festival. The result is a district that rewards a slow, unhurried visit: browse the stores in the afternoon, ride up the Mirai Tower or the free Oasis 21 deck as the sky darkens, then dissolve into the Nishiki backstreets for dinner and drinks. Getting here could not be simpler — Sakae Station sits at the crossing of the Higashiyama and Meijo subway lines, a few minutes from Nagoya Station — making it the natural base for an evening in the city.
