Rairaikyo Gorge

Rairaikyo Gorge is a beautiful river gorge carved by the Natori River just beside the historic hot-spring town of Akiu Onsen, west of Sendai. Its name evokes the sound of the flowing water, and its combination of dramatically sculpted rock formations, clear emerald pools and a well-maintained riverside trail makes it one of the most enjoyable easy nature walks within reach of the city, especially when the surrounding forest blazes with autumn colour.

Over countless years the river has cut through the volcanic rock to create the gorge's distinctive scenery. The water has smoothed and shaped the stone into curious formations, including deep circular potholes worn by swirling gravel, undercut ledges, small waterfalls and narrow channels through which the current rushes. The rock walls rise on either side, and in places the river widens into calm, clear pools that glow green and blue in the light. Interpretive markers along the way point out the most notable formations and explain the geology, adding interest to the stroll.

A gentle walking trail follows the course of the gorge for a couple of kilometres, allowing visitors to appreciate its changing scenery from multiple angles. A striking red arched bridge crosses the river and provides one of the classic viewpoints, looking down into the gorge, but the greatest pleasure comes from walking the full path, which passes quieter and more dramatic sections that day-trippers who only glance from the bridge miss entirely. The trail involves some steps and uneven ground, making it moderately demanding, but it is manageable for anyone reasonably mobile and richly rewarding.

The gorge is beautiful in every season. Summer brings cool, deep-green shade and the refreshing sound of water, a welcome escape from the heat, while autumn is the star attraction, when the maples and other trees lining the gorge turn brilliant red, orange and gold and reflect in the pools, creating scenes of exceptional beauty that draw photographers from across the region. Spring offers fresh green and blossom, and even winter has a stark charm.

Its location is a large part of the appeal. Rairaikyo sits right at the edge of Akiu Onsen, one of the oldest and most famous hot-spring resorts in Tohoku, so a walk through the gorge combines perfectly with a relaxing soak in the town's baths. The nearby Akiu Great Falls, a short distance further into the hills, completes an excellent nature circuit, letting you pair a thundering waterfall, a sculpted gorge and a hot-spring town in a single day out from the city.

The gorge is free and open at all times, though daylight is needed for the trail. Restrooms, parking and access to the walking path are provided, and the town's facilities are close at hand. Getting here from Sendai takes about fifty minutes by bus toward Akiu Onsen. For a scenic, refreshing and inexpensive escape into nature, capped by a hot-spring bath, Rairaikyo Gorge is one of the finest short trips from Sendai and an autumn highlight of the region.
