Orion Happy Park (Nago Brewery)

Orion Happy Park is the visitor centre and brewery of Orion Beer, the drink that is to Okinawa what Sapporo is to Hokkaido — a local lager so ubiquitous across the islands that it functions as a kind of edible flag. Located in Nago in the north of Okinawa's main island, the brewery offers guided tours that trace the beer from raw ingredients to the glass and end, most memorably, with a tasting of freshly brewed draft.

Orion was founded in the years after the Second World War, part of the effort to rebuild Okinawa's economy, and it deliberately brewed a light, crisp, easy-drinking lager suited to the subtropical heat. That style — refreshing and clean rather than heavy — remains its hallmark, and it is the beer you will be handed at almost every izakaya, beach shack and festival across the prefecture. Touring the brewery therefore feels like meeting a local institution on its home ground.

The guided tour walks visitors through the brewing process, from malt and hops to fermentation and bottling, with displays on the company's history and its place in Okinawan life. The finale is the reason many come: guests of drinking age are treated to a couple of glasses of freshly poured Orion draft, about as fresh as the beer ever gets, served with light snacks. Designated drivers and non-drinkers are given soft drinks instead, so groups should plan their transport accordingly — a sensible precaution given the brewery's location well outside Naha.

Because Nago sits in northern Okinawa, the brewery pairs naturally with the region's other attractions, including the famous Churaumi Aquarium and the Motobu peninsula, making it an easy addition to a day exploring the north. It is reachable by highway bus from Naha or, more conveniently, by car, roughly an hour and a half from the capital. An on-site shop sells Orion merchandise and beer to take away, and there are dining options nearby for a meal to go with the tasting.

Tours are generally free but must usually be reserved in advance, and slots can fill in peak season, so booking ahead is wise; the brewery keeps daytime hours and closes on certain holidays. For beer lovers, the tour is a genuine treat; for everyone else, it is a relaxed, good-humoured stop that explains why a bottle of Orion, condensation running down the glass, is one of the defining tastes of an Okinawan holiday.
