Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is the star attraction of northern Okinawa and one of the most spectacular aquariums on earth. Its name comes from the Okinawan words chura, meaning beautiful, and umi, meaning sea, and the whole institution is a celebration of the extraordinary marine life of the surrounding subtropical waters. Set within Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula, with the blue of the East China Sea filling the horizon beyond, it is a place that leaves visitors of all ages awestruck.

The aquarium's centrepiece is the Kuroshio Sea tank, for years one of the largest aquarium tanks in the world. Behind a vast acrylic panel several metres thick, thousands of tonnes of water hold multiple whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea, alongside enormous manta rays, schools of tuna and countless other species that glide past in a hypnotic, ceaseless procession. Sitting on the benches before this window, watching a whale shark cruise silently overhead, is a genuinely humbling experience, and the daily feeding sessions, when the whale sharks tilt vertically to gulp their food, are a highlight worth timing your visit around.

The rest of the aquarium is arranged to take visitors on a journey from the shallows to the deep. It begins with a touch pool of starfish and sea cucumbers, moves through vividly recreated coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, and descends into the eerie world of deep-sea creatures rarely seen alive. There are dedicated zones for sharks, and the facility is a world leader in the research and captive breeding of manta rays and sharks, contributing real scientific knowledge alongside public spectacle.

Beyond the main building, and free to enter, the surrounding Ocean Expo Park offers dolphin shows at the Okichan Theater, a manatee pool, a sea-turtle enclosure and a beautiful stretch of beach, making a full day easy to fill. The setting, with subtropical gardens and sweeping sea views, is as much a draw as the exhibits.

The experience is family-friendly, comfortable and fully accessible, with ramps, lifts and clear signage in multiple languages. Most visitors spend around three hours in the aquarium itself, more if they explore the wider park. Because it lies well to the north of Naha, reaching it takes planning: express buses run from the capital but take two to three hours, so many travellers rent a car or join a day tour to combine it with other northern sights such as Cape Manzamo.

A notable point is the aquarium's pioneering role. It was among the first facilities in the world to keep whale sharks long-term and to make breakthroughs in understanding these giant, gentle animals, and its research continues to inform marine conservation globally. Visiting is therefore not only entertaining but a window into serious science.

The best time to visit is a weekday, ideally arriving in the late afternoon when entry is discounted and the crowds at the main tank thin out. To get there, drive or take an express bus north to Ocean Expo Park.
