Mount Zao Okama Crater

The Okama is a near-perfectly circular volcanic crater lake set high in the Zao mountain range on the border of Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures, and it ranks among the most striking natural spectacles in all of Tohoku. Roughly 360 metres across and ringed by steep, barren volcanic walls, its water glows an unearthly emerald to turquoise green, a colour so vivid it looks almost artificial against the grey rock and open sky. The name Okama means cauldron or pot, a fitting description for this jewel-like pool cradled in the mountains.

The crater sits below the peaks of the Zao complex, an active volcanic group that has shaped the surrounding highland into a dramatic landscape of ridges, cinder slopes, and alpine meadows. The lake's remarkable colour comes from mineral content in the water and shifts noticeably with the light and weather, ranging from deep emerald on bright days to a paler milky turquoise under cloud, so no two visits look quite the same. Because the water is strongly acidic, nothing lives in it, which only adds to its otherworldly stillness.

Access is seasonal, as the Zao Echo Line, the toll road that climbs to the viewing area, is closed by snow through the long winter and typically opens from late April to early November. In the open months a short walk from the car park brings you to the crater rim, where a fenced path lets you look down into the caldera. For the energetic, ridge trails around the rim and up to nearby summits such as Mount Katta offer longer hikes with expansive views over the whole Zao range and the plains beyond, and in clear conditions you can see for great distances across Tohoku.

Weather on the mountain is famously changeable. Mornings are usually clearest, with the crater sharp and the colour at its best, while afternoon cloud and mist frequently roll over the ridge and swallow the view entirely, so an early start greatly improves your odds. Even in summer the altitude keeps temperatures cool and the wind can be brisk, so a jacket is wise. Autumn brings brilliant foliage to the lower slopes, making the drive up along the Echo Line a spectacle in its own right.

Zao is equally famous in winter for its juhyo, the snow monsters, frost-covered fir trees on the higher slopes reached by ropeway, but the Okama itself is inaccessible then. For summer and autumn visitors, however, the crater is the undisputed highlight, a bucket-list natural wonder that rewards the journey into the mountains.

Practically, the Okama is a day trip from Sendai, reached by seasonal bus or car via Shiroishi-Zao Station, with a rest house, restrooms, parking, and a seasonal shop at the viewing area. It combines well with the Zao onsen towns for a soak after a day at altitude. Come on a clear morning, dress for mountain weather, and stand at the rim as the light catches that impossible green water; it is one of those views that fixes itself in memory and makes the long approach entirely worthwhile.
