Kouri Island

Kouri Island (Kouri-jima) is a small, roughly circular island off the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa, famous for the breathtaking bridge that reaches it and for the impossibly blue water that surrounds it. Since the opening of the Kouri Bridge in 2005, this once-remote island has become one of the most beloved scenic drives in the prefecture, offering turquoise seascapes, quiet beaches and a relaxed island atmosphere all within an easy northern day trip.

The journey is half the attraction. The Kouri Bridge stretches roughly two kilometres across shallow, luminous water, connecting the island to neighbouring Yagaji Island, and driving across it feels like gliding over a lagoon of shifting blues and greens. A viewpoint at the island end lets you stop and photograph the bridge arcing back over the sea, one of the signature images of northern Okinawa. On a bright day the clarity and colour of the water here rival any tropical destination.

Once on the island, the pace slows. Kouri is small enough to circle in a short drive, and its edges are ringed with beaches where the sand is pale and the shallows glassy. The main beaches near the bridge are easy to reach and popular for swimming and simply soaking up the scenery, while quieter coves reward a little exploration. The island is also wrapped in gentle legend: local folklore tells of an Okinawan "Adam and Eve," a primordial couple said to have lived on Kouri, giving it a romantic reputation reinforced by modern tourism.

That romance crystallises at Kouri's most photographed natural feature, the Heart Rock on Tinu Beach — a pair of rock formations that, viewed from the right angle, frame a heart shape against the sea. Made famous by a television commercial, it draws couples and photographers, and is best seen around low tide when you can walk out toward the formations. Elsewhere, small cafes and shops serve Okinawan snacks and the island's celebrated sea-grape seaweed and shrimp dishes.

Beyond the beaches and the heart rock, Kouri simply invites you to enjoy the views: pull over at a scenic spot, watch the light play on the water, and breathe the sea air. The combination of the dramatic bridge crossing and the serene island beyond makes it a favourite for a leisurely northern itinerary, often paired with the nearby Churaumi Aquarium and Nakijin Castle.

A rental car is essential, as the island lies far north of Naha with no rail and minimal bus service; the drive takes up to two hours but the scenery rewards it. Allow around ninety minutes to cross the bridge, stop at the viewpoints, visit a beach and find the Heart Rock, longer if you want to swim or linger over lunch. Bright, blue and beautifully photogenic, Kouri Island is one of northern Okinawa's most joyful stops.
