Jinzu Gorge

Jinzu Gorge, or Jinzukyo, is a magnificent 15-kilometre river gorge carved by the Jinzu River as it flows down from the mountains on the Gifu border through the southern part of Toyama City. Designated a prefectural natural park, it is widely regarded as one of the most scenic spots in the whole of Toyama, a long, winding corridor of steep forested slopes, rocky bluffs and clear rushing water that puts on a spectacular show of colour in spring and autumn and offers a peaceful escape into nature within easy reach of the city.

The gorge was shaped over millennia by the powerful flow of the Jinzu River, one of the major rivers of the Hokuriku region, cutting a deep valley through the surrounding ranges. The result is a dramatic landscape of rapids and pools framed by cliffs and thickly wooded hillsides, where the river alternately narrows into churning channels and widens into calmer green stretches. The interplay of moving water, rock and forest gives the gorge a constantly changing character as you travel its length, and viewpoints along the way reveal fresh perspectives on the river below.

The seasons transform the scene. In spring the slopes come alive with fresh green foliage and the pale colour of wild blossom, while autumn, from late October into mid-November, is the gorge's crowning glory, when the maples and other hardwoods clothing the valley turn to brilliant shades of red, orange and gold reflected in the water. This autumn display draws visitors from across the region, and the gorge is regularly listed among Toyama's finest foliage destinations. Summer offers cool, shaded riverside walks, and even winter brings a quiet, snow-touched beauty to the valley.

One of the special pleasures of Jinzu Gorge is that the railway follows the river through much of its length, so the journey itself becomes a sightseeing experience. The JR Takayama Main Line, running south from Toyama toward Takayama in the Hida mountains, hugs the gorge, and passengers are treated to a rolling panorama of cliffs, water and forest from the carriage window, especially memorable when the autumn colours are at their peak. Drivers, too, can follow scenic roads along and above the river, stopping at overlooks and small parks, and the area is dotted with hot springs where visitors can relax after exploring.

Because it lies within Toyama City's boundaries, the gorge is an easy addition to a stay in the city, combining wild river scenery with convenient access. The Nishi-Inotani checkpoint museum and other historic sites along the old Hida highway that once threaded through these mountains add cultural interest to the natural beauty. To visit, simply ride the JR Takayama Main Line south from Toyama Station into the gorge, alighting at one of the riverside stations such as Sasazu, or drive along the valley roads. Whether seen from a train window amid a blaze of autumn leaves or explored on foot along the riverbank, Jinzu Gorge is one of the natural highlights of Toyama and a reminder of the dramatic landscapes that lie just beyond the city.
