Hisaya-odori Park

Hisaya-odori Park is the green spine of central Nagoya — a long, landscaped promenade that runs for roughly two kilometres through the Sakae district, threading beneath the landmark Mirai Tower and stitching the downtown together into a single, walkable public space. Reopened in 2020 after a major redevelopment led by the same company behind Tokyo's Namba Parks, it transformed a tired median-strip park into one of the city's most pleasant places to linger.

The park's design cleverly blends open lawns, tree-lined walkways and clusters of low-slung glass pavilions housing cafes, restaurants and lifestyle shops. Rather than a single block, it unfolds as a sequence of zones stretching north to south, each with its own mood: broad event lawns near the Mirai Tower, terrace dining and a covered plaza, quieter green corridors, and a northern stretch, sometimes called the 'Rose Court' and 'Zon' areas, with more casual seating. The effect is a rare thing in dense Japanese cities — generous, unhurried outdoor space right at the commercial core.

The undisputed centrepiece is the Chubu Electric Power Mirai Tower rising directly from the park. Completed in 1954 as Japan's first true broadcast tower, it is now a floodlit symbol of the city and a designated Important Cultural Property, and the park was deliberately re-landscaped to frame it. From the promenade you can look straight up the illuminated lattice, and just to the south the reflective water-roof of Oasis 21 mirrors it after dark, giving photographers one of Nagoya's signature night compositions.

Hisaya-odori is above all a place to do very little, pleasantly. Office workers eat lunch on the lawns, families let children run, couples share terrace cocktails, and joggers trace the length of the promenade. Through the year the park hosts a busy calendar of markets, food and craft events, seasonal illuminations and festival stages, so there is often something happening without any of it feeling forced. Spring brings cherry blossom along the walkways and autumn a scatter of colour, making the shoulder seasons especially rewarding.

Because it sits at the centre of Sakae, the park doubles as a natural hub for exploring the surrounding district — department stores, the Oasis 21 complex and the Nishiki nightlife quarter are all within a few minutes' walk. Access could hardly be easier: Hisaya-odori Station, on the Sakura-dori and Meijo subway lines, has exits directly into the park, and Sakae Station is a five-minute stroll away. Whether as a breather between shopping stops or an evening destination in its own right, Hisaya-odori Park showcases a greener, more livable side of downtown Nagoya.
