Hirakawa Zoological Park

Hirakawa Zoological Park is Kagoshima's principal zoo, a large and well-loved family attraction spread across a green hillside south of the city. Combining a modern, naturalistic zoo with botanical gardens and a small amusement area, it makes a full and enjoyable day out, and its elevated setting delivers an unexpected bonus: sweeping views across Kinko Bay to the smoking cone of Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes.

The zoo is home to a wide range of animals from around the world, presented in spacious, landscaped enclosures designed to show the creatures in surroundings resembling their natural habitats. Among the stars are koalas - Kagoshima is one of the few places in Japan to keep them - along with white tigers, giraffes, elephants, hippos and a large African savanna-style zone where zebras and antelope roam together. Careful landscaping and viewpoints throughout the park mean that watching the animals is often accompanied by the drama of the volcano and bay beyond.

Beyond the animals, the park doubles as a botanical garden, with seasonal flowers, mature trees and cherry blossom in spring adding colour to the grounds. A compact amusement area with gentle rides, including a Ferris wheel, entertains younger children, and the combination of wildlife, gardens and rides makes Hirakawa especially good for families. Feeding times, close-encounter areas and educational displays add interest for children keen to learn about the animals.

The visiting experience is relaxed and spacious, easily filling half a day or more. The park is large and set on a slope, so there is a fair amount of walking, though paths are well maintained and much of the site is manageable for strollers and wheelchairs, with rest areas, cafes and restrooms throughout. The hillside layout means some gentle climbs, but these are rewarded with the panoramic volcano views that set Hirakawa apart from a typical city zoo.

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, offering mild weather and, in spring, cherry blossom across the grounds; summer can be hot, so early visits and shade are advisable, while winter is quiet and clear. Whatever the season, a fine day brings out the best of the Sakurajima backdrop that makes the setting so memorable.

Getting there is straightforward by bus. Direct buses run from central Kagoshima and Kagoshima-Chuo Station to the zoo south of the city, and drivers will find ample parking. For families travelling with children, or anyone who enjoys a good zoo with a spectacular view, Hirakawa Zoological Park offers a rewarding, easygoing day - a chance to meet koalas and white tigers with an active volcano smoking on the horizon, a combination found nowhere else in Japan.
