Goza Shirahama Beach

Goza Shirahama is the finest swimming beach on the Shima peninsula and one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in the whole Ise-Shima National Park. Curving along the tip of the Goza peninsula that shelters the mouth of Ago Bay, it is a long ribbon of fine white sand backed by pines and lapped by water so clear it has earned a place among Japan's cleanest bathing beaches. In a region famous for its intricate ria coastline of pearl rafts and hidden inlets, Goza Shirahama offers something rarer here: a broad, open, sandy shore made for lazy summer days.

The beach comes alive in the official bathing season of July and August, when families arrive for the shallow, gently shelving water that is safe for children and warm enough for long swims. Beach houses set up along the sand offer showers, shade and refreshments, and the calm, protected setting makes it a relaxed alternative to the busier resorts of mainland Japan. Even outside the swimming months the beach is a lovely place to walk, with soft sand underfoot, the scent of the pines, and the wide horizon of the Pacific meeting the sheltered waters of the bay.

Goza itself is a small fishing community at the very end of the peninsula, and part of the pleasure of coming here is the journey. Many visitors arrive not by road but by the sightseeing boats that thread across Ago Bay from Kashikojima, gliding past the wooden rafts where Akoya oysters are cultivated for pearls and the scattered green islands that give the bay its jewelled reputation. Stepping off the boat at Goza Port and walking the short distance to the beach feels like arriving at a genuine end-of-the-line escape.

The orientation of the peninsula gives Goza Shirahama one of its finest assets: it faces broadly west across the open bay, making it a superb spot for sunset. As the light softens, the sky and the calm water take on gold and rose tones, and the silhouettes of the bay's islands and pine-clad points stand out against the glow. Photographers and couples linger for the evening show long after the swimmers have gone.

Nearby, the Goza area rewards a little exploration on foot, with coastal paths, small shrines and lookout points over both the sheltered bay and the wilder Pacific side of the peninsula. The contrast between the tranquil inner waters and the open ocean is a defining feature of this dramatic stretch of coast.

Getting here takes some planning, which is part of why the beach stays relatively unspoilt. The most scenic route is the boat from Kashikojima Station, the terminus of the Kintetsu Shima Line, taking about 25 minutes across the bay; alternatively, buses run to Goza Port from Ugata Station. Bring what you need, as facilities are seasonal and low-key.
