Bitchu Matsuyama Castle

Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is one of Japan's most extraordinary castles - the highest surviving original castle in the country, perched near the 430-metre summit of Mt. Gagyu above the town of Takahashi. It is the only mountaintop fortress among Japan's twelve original castles, those whose main keeps survived the demolitions, fires and wars of the modern era intact, making it a genuine and precious piece of feudal architecture rather than a reconstruction.

The castle's origins reach back to the 13th century, with the present keep and surviving structures dating largely from the 17th century. Its remote, defensible mountain position, ringed by stone walls that seem to grow out of the rock, meant it was never a comfortable residence but a true stronghold, and that same isolation is why its wooden keep, turrets and walls escaped the fate of so many lowland castles. Reaching it and walking its weathered timber floors offers a rare, authentic encounter with the reality of a Japanese mountain fortress.

But Bitchu Matsuyama is most famous today for a spectacle of nature. On clear, cold mornings in autumn, a thick sea of clouds (unkai) fills the valley below, and the castle appears to float above it like a fortress in the sky - the celebrated 'castle in the sky' or Tenku no Shiro. The classic view is not from the castle itself but from a dedicated observation platform, Unkai Tenbodai, on a facing hillside across the valley, reached before dawn to catch the phenomenon as the rising sun lights the mist. It is one of the most magical sights in all of Japan when conditions align.

Visiting the castle is an adventure that requires effort and planning. From Bitchu-Takahashi Station on the JR Hakubi Line, visitors take a taxi or seasonal shared shuttle up the mountain to the Fuigo Toge trailhead, from which a steep 20-minute uphill walk leads to the keep. The climb, the thin mountain air and the sudden appearance of the stone-walled fortress among the trees make the arrival genuinely thrilling. Because of the terrain, sturdy shoes are essential and the site is not suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

Allow a good part of a day, and note that seeing both the castle up close and the sea-of-clouds view from across the valley requires separate trips and a very early start for the latter. Autumn is by far the best season, combining the highest chance of unkai with brilliant maple colour on the mountain. Admission to the keep is modest, and the surrounding town of Takahashi has its own historic samurai district and temples worth exploring.

Remote, atmospheric and utterly authentic, Bitchu Matsuyama Castle rewards the determined traveller with an experience quite unlike any other castle in Japan - a genuine feudal keep among the clouds.
